An honest, at times absurd, conversation about being a Black woman in America, The Mirror is a short film that weaves the personal stories, experiences and reflections of nine Black women talking about their interactions with white people. This award-winning animated film is a revealing take on what it is like to be a Black woman in America.

Illustrated by Still I Rise Films grantee, Lola Noguer. Interviews by Delores Thompson from the Oakland School for the Arts, a Still I Rise non-profit partner.

DELORES THOMPSON: THE POWER OF SOUND

Delores Thompson teaches radio production at the Oakland School for the Arts. A 25-year broadcast veteran, Dr.  Thompson started her career at KSBT TV 'SoulBeat,' a 24hr Black-owned video network where she served as the Program Director for New York & Sonoma County outlets. In Los Angeles, she’s worked in radio stations as an on-air talent, Assistant Program and Music Director. After seven years, Delores Thompson joined Stevie Wonder’s 102.3 KJLH, where she earned the title of  Southern California's #1 Lady in the Mid-days. Currently, Dr. Thompson can be heard over the air-waves on 102.9 KBLX and she can be seen on TV One's "Unsung" music docuseries.

A long-term supporter of Still I Rise Films, Delores Thompson and Mimi Chakarova collaborated on creating The Mirror, an award-winning animated short film that has screened at film festivals throughout the world. After premiering in Toronto last May, The Mirror was recently selected by Hot Docs for their 2024 Docs For Schools Winter Program.
